Wolfgang Herbert Ludwig of Shaftsbury, Vermont, passed away on Tuesday, April 13, at the age of 80.
He was born in Germany, on November 15, 1940, and in 1951, he immigrated, along with his parents, to the United States, where the family settled in Shaftsbury. He had great appreciation for nature and wildlife, which was well-suited to his vocation as a dairy farmer.
Always reading about adventure and the outdoors, Wolfgang traveled to Québec, British Columbia, Wyoming, and Colorado on hunting trips, and he loved to recount stories of those expeditions with vivid detail. He had a keen mind for drafting and engineering, and while quiet and reserved, Wolfgang is remembered for his kindness and dry sense of humor. His fierce work ethic and curiosity were a model for his children and everyone who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Priscilla Ayers Ludwig; three daughters, Martha R. Ludwig, Jessica Ludwig, and Jennifer Ludwig; his mother, Martha Kittel Ludwig; and his brother, Fritz Wolfgang Ludwig. He was preceded in death by his son, Wolfgang Herbert Ludwig Jr, and his father, Fritz Paul Ludwig.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, April 17, at 11:30 a.m. at Center Shaftsbury Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation or the Green Mountain Club.
