Mrs. Nicolle Carol Woodward (nee Fleming), 79, a longtime resident of Bennington, died peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on the morning of September 25th.
Nicolle was born on Christmas Day, December 25, 1941 in Springfield, Vermont to Carolyn Harriet Griffin VanPatten. In 1955 Nicolle was adopted by Frank R. Fleming and Sylvia B. Fleming (nee Allen) who became her father and mother lovingly guiding her to into adulthood. Nicolle was a graduate of the former Bennington High School, class of 1960. Nicolle married Dennis S. Woodward at St. Francis de Sales Church on June 25, 1960. With help from their parents, they built their first home in Bennington on Beech Street on a property given to them by Nicolle's parents.
Nicolle began her work career as a secretary at the YMCA learning bookkeeping while working on independent projects eventually managing the books for the family construction company. She worked at Putnam Memorial Hospital in the billing department, then for several doctor's offices in the area. She retired in 2012 from the Bennington Police Department after 19 years as administrative assistant to three Police Chiefs. She was excited to work at the police station stating that, "her father was the janitor when the building was the Post Office and she wanted to walk the halls where her father walked". She was a dedicated employee of the Police Department and took great pride in being an important part of their team for the City of Bennington. She also served as a member of the Bennington Historic Preservation Commission enthusiastically documenting the renovation of the Police Station.
Her greatest passion was her family. She took great joy from the rewards of raising her children and hosting holiday dinners for the family. She loved to travel and kept busy with many hobbies and projects including photographing nature, painting landscapes, sewing clothing and crocheting blankets. Her most noted talents included writing short stories and poetry and winning awards for her cross-stitch tapestries. Her short story "Grandpa's Gift" was first published in 2003 in "Chicken Soup for the Bride's Soul", Chapter 7: Treasured Moments. Her second short story "Daffodils are Forever" earned the No. 1 spot in "Chicken Soup for the Gardner's Soul", in their 2012 publication, Chapter 1: The Joy of Gardening.
Survivors include the love of her life and husband, Dennis S. Woodward, three children: Cynthia Woodward of North Bennington, David Woodward of Glenville, NY and Denise Woodward-Detrich of Walhalla, SC along with many grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her sisters Barbara Jean Telford Willard and Patti Ann Castro.

The funeral will be held from St. Peters Episcopal Church on Wednesday September 29, 2021 at 11:00 a.m.
The burial will take place in the family lot at Park Lawn Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
