Chapin Olcott Darling

Chapin Olcott Darling, 90, of Bennington, VT beloved husband of Joan (Ratsey) Darling for 68 years, passed peacefully on Wednesday, July 6th at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, VT.

Born in Bronxville, NY on May 12th, 1932, Chapin attended high school in Bronxville, NY and later graduated with a degree in business from Saint Lawrence University in Canton, New York.

Building on his ROTC experience in college, he went on to formally serve his country in the United States Army achieving the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in the Military Police force while stationed at Laurel, MD.

In the private sector, Chapin built a 22-year career in the insurance industry while residing with his family in Greenwich, CT and Glastonbury, CT respectively.

In 1980, Chapin and Joan moved to Weston, VT to fulfill a lifelong dream of independently owning and running their own business. They purchased the Black Shutters Inn and transformed it over a period of nearly 30 years into an iconic New England Bed & Breakfast named the Darling Family Inn.

Chapin spent his final years at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington, VT. He leaves behind his wife, 4 children, 5 grandchildren, two great grandchildren, as well as his elder brother.

He will be laid to rest in a private burial at Beechwoods Cemetery in New Rochelle, NY.
