Carolyn June King, 81, of Katies Lane, Valley Falls, NY, died unexpectedly on Monday, May 1, 2017. Born in Hartford, Connecticut on June 16, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Carl Williams Stevens and Emily Rose Harsala. She married the late John Bernard King on December 3, 1955 in Windsor, CT and they spent more than 40 years together until his passing in 1999.
June, as she was known to friends, was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. She retired from the U.S. Postal service after decades of service in Pennsylvania, Long Island, and Sand Lake, New York.
June was an active member of the First Congregational Church in Old Bennington, a volunteer for the Bennington Museum and the former treasurer of the Bennington Garden Club. Besides gardening, she enjoyed sailing, cross country skiing, theatre, spirited card games, and summer evenings of croquet. She will be remembered for her perpetual energy, quick wit, hearty laugh and amazing spirit.
Survivors include two sisters, Elaine Ferris of Flagstaff, AZ and Carlene Hirst of California; four children, Sarah Hadden of Manchester, VT, Kathryn King-Evrard of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Carl King of Miami FL, and Martha Wentworth of Skaneateles, New York, along with ten grandchildren and one great grandchild.
The funeral service will be held at the First Congregational Church, Monument Avenue in Bennington on Monday, May 8, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Kenneth Clark, pastor, officiating. Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home from 12:00 to 1:30 pm the same day.
