NORTH POWNAL
Barbara Mackey Champney, 87, widow of Richard E. Champney Sr., a longtime resident of North Pownal, died Friday, July 12, 2019 at the home of her daughter in Grantham, NH.
Born in Englewood, NJ January 29, 1932, she was the daughter of the late James and Ruth (O'Dell) Mackey. She received her early education in New Jersey and later at St. Francis de Sales Academy in Bennington. Barb was a 1950 graduate of Bennington High School and later attended the Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing in Troy.
Barb and Richie were married by Rev. Joseph Pray at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in North Pownal on September 29, 1951. Richie died April 18, 2007.
Barb was employed for thirty years as the Postmistress at the North Pownal post office. Barb was very active in the Pownal community for many years, enjoyed sewing and was a member of the Quiet Valley Quilters.
Survivors include three children and their spouses, Ruthann (John) Buchanan of Grantham, NH, Jane (David) Anderson of Narragansett, RI and Rick (Pierrette) Champney of North Chelmsford, MA; six grandchildren, Audrey (Chris) Otlowski, Travis Champney, Vanessa Anderson, Alex (Meaghan) Anderson, Jenna (Joshua) Buchanan Weller and David Buchanan; a sister, Jane Finaly of Sonoma, CA and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a brother, John Mackey.
The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 17, 2019 at 11:00 a.m.
At Barb's request there will be no calling hours.
Burial will take place in the family lot in Southlawn Cemetery, Williamstown, MA.
