William Henry Told, Jr. was born October 16, 1930 at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Palm Beach, Florida. His father, William, Sr., and his mother, Sadie Louella (nee Lindenmeyer) were part of the local community where he grew up and attended the Graham Eckes School, later serving for a number of years as President of its alumni association. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Florida. Bill served in the Korean War as a lieutenant with the United States Air Force, Strategic Air Command, mostly in Iceland. Following this, he obtained a Master’s Degree from Columbia University with post-graduate study at the University of Oxford, England. He began his banking career with the Manufacturers Hanover Trust Company (now J.P. Morgan Chase), staying with the bank through a series of mergers. During this time, he obtained, under the bank’s sponsorship, a graduate degree in bank marketing from Northwestern University in Chicago. Following early retirement as Vice President-Corporate Affairs, he continued as a consultant to the successor institution and to the Swiss Bank Corporation (now UBS). Bill and his wife of many years, Jane Hill Told, have been long-standing participants in both Palm Beach and Dorset, VT charitable and social endeavors. Their memberships included the Everglades Club, Bath and Tennis Club, Sailfish Club, and Club Colette in Palm Beach, and Ekwanok Country Club and Dorset Field Club in Vermont. In Palm Beach, they were Benefactors and Trustees of the Society of the Four Arts, members of the Episcopal Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea, active in Cleveland Clinic galas, occasional hosts to Red Cross ambassador guests, and active in the Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League. During their summers in Vermont, Bill and Jane supported the Southern Vermont Art Center; Zion Episcopal Church, St. John’s Summer Chapel; Manchester Music Festival; Hildene, The Lincoln Family Home; Dorset Historical Society; and Manchester Community Library. In May 2023, they were major contributors to the Southern Vermont Medical Center telemedicine project. Besides his wife Jane, Bill leaves his step-children, Robert F. Schmoll (Laura) of Founex, Switzerland, and Anne W. Lee (James) of Lexington, MA, and step-grandchildren Daniel Sc hmoll (Rebecca), Timothy Schmoll (Claire), Tyler Schmoll, Ethan Lee, and Aidan Lee. A celebration of Bill’s life will take place at a later date in Palm Beach.
