(BENNINGTON) William "Bill" Peat Jr., 81 and 364 days, passed away peacefully at home in Bennington, VT, surrounded by his family, on July 14, 2021 following a brief illness. Bill was known for his easy-going manner, gift of the gab, infectious smile and generosity to others. He was a master at making people feel at ease which guaranteed him a new friend every day. His number one priority was the well-being of his family.
Bill was born on July 15, 1939, to Lillian (Scott) and William Peat Sr. in North Adams, MA. He graduated from St. Joseph's High School in 1957 and completed a post graduate year at Brewster Academy. He served in the U.S. Air Force (1960-1964) and was stationed at Mildenhall, England where he lived with his wife, Linda (Smachetti).
Upon their return, the couple settled in Bennington to work and raise a family. From 1964 to 2001, Bill was employed at C.L. White Glass, Inc. where he became the second-generation owner and operator of a successful family business. After years of hard work, Bill developed into a skilled tradesman and respected businessman. He employed his skills to generate high quality work and creative building solutions in a day when many jobs were custom made. He was frequently called on and eager to help with home improvement projects gone awry or to offer anything he possessed if meant it would improve someone else's day.
In retirement, Bill and Linda lived in Bennington and Delray Beach, FL., where they relaxed during the winter months. They traveled extensively in this country and abroad with the network of friends they fostered through the years.
He was predeceased by his son, Jonathan Peat (2017), with whom he was exceptionally close and whose death left an indelible scar.
Bill is survived by Linda Peat, his loving wife of almost 58 years; a daughter Kristen and her husband David MacLean; a son Brian Peat and his wife Mema; four grand-daughters Sadie MacLean, Ellen MacLean Blanchard, Piper MacLean, Quinn Peat; and one great-grandson; as well as many relatives in the Peat and Smachetti families.
