William Bell Mustain passed away on December 29, 2020 in Bennington, Vermont after a lengthy illness due to Agent Orange which he acquired while serving his country in Vietnam.
He was born on April 1, 1938 in Oakland, California and grew up in Livermore, California. HIs childhood was filled with riding his bike to the creek and attending the annual rodeos in Livermore. He graduated from Livermore High School in 1957 and was an Eagle Scout.
William served his country in numerous military branches. He served in the Army from 1957 to 1960 then again from 1963 to 1966 in Vietnam. He enlisted in the Navy Reserves and served in the Seabees from 1969 to 2000 as an electrician.
William also worked for Western Electric/AT&T for 41 years as an electrician.
Bill had a love for the outdoors and enjoyed hiking in nature. He also had a love for gardening and enjoyed growing strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries.
While in his youth he loved the Oakland A's but in later years became an avid Red Sox Fan. He enjoyed attending games at Fenway Park with his grandson, friends and other family members.
Along with baseball he had a passion for football and was an avid Oakland Raiders, San Francisco Forty-Niners and Buffalo Bills fan.Whenever he watched football or baseball games his Pepsi and peanuts were readily available.Reading Louis L'Amour books, watching old westerns, and listening to country music were also a favorite pastime.
Bill never met a stranger and would talk to anyone he met. He was always ready to lend a hand to anyone in need. He recently began attending BPI and loved to attend and socialize. He was able to share his love of cribbage with others at the facility.
His love for our Savior was evident as he served in numerous callings as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday-Saints. The youth of the church and area could count on his support as he attended their sporting events. The very young would clamour to him at church where he would offer them a peppermint Lifesaver.
His mother and father John and Hazel Mustain preceded him in death along with numerous brothers and sisters, Jack Mustain, Jim Mustain, Thomas Mustain, Richard Mustain, Howard Mustain, Betty Sowers, and Helen Mustain.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years Sandra Mustain, his children Jaraun Mustain of Bennington Vermont, Tamara Mustain of Troy, New York, and Robert(Nichole) Mustain of Pine Cedar Hills, Utah. Ten grandchildren, Kayleigh McIntire, Samantha (John) Karambatsakis, Andreya Derby, Elizabeth Derby, Geoffrey Winger (Anna), Olivia Cappellano, Marina Cappellano, Courtnie(Nicolas) Kemp, Brook (Ryan) Gubler, and Austin Mustain, He also leaves behind two great grandchildren Aivree Smith and Kennedy Kemp. His brother Larry Mustain of Sacramento California and his twin sister Nancy Cissna of Oklahoma also survive.
The family would like to extend their thankfulness to all the VA employees that treated him over the past few years. As well as all the faculty at BPI and residents who befriended him there in his final years. The family would also like to acknowledge the compassion and excellent care the numerous nurses, aides and doctors at SVMC provided to him as he passed.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 7 at 7 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints in Bennington Vermont. Due to Covid the service will be limited to 50 people inside the building. Masks will be required. The service will have a live/recorded feed for those who cannot travel or are unable to attend.
