William A. Flood, MD
Dr. William "Bill" Flood passed away on Thursday, September 8, at Brookdale Fillmore Pond in Bennington, Vt. He was 94 years of age.
He was born September 4, 1922, to Agnes (Driscoll) and John Flood of Bank St, North Bennington, Vt. The middle child of 3, he was very bright, and enjoyed sports, ham radio, hunting, carpentry, and cars.
In his early years he looked toward a vocation in the priesthood. He attended St. Augustine Seminary in New Jersey and graduated Salutatorian.
During his college years at St. Michael's in Colchester, VT, his career focus shifted to that of medicine. He graduated from the University of Vermont College of Medicine April 14, 1947, and married his wife of 54 years, Shirley (Smyle) the following day. Shirley died January 2, 2002.
They returned to reside in North Bennington and built their home next door to his parents. The Bank Street house served as a Family Practice office for many years, and during the 1950's, Dr. Flood also worked as the regional Medical Examiner for southern Vermont.
He loved his home town, but did leave in 1951 to join the U.S. Navy as a Medical Officer during the Korean War.
After his return, Dr. Flood became interested in further specialization in Obstetrics and Gynecology. He completed a residency at Albany Medical Center in 1961, while continuing to work at his general practice at home. He opened an office in Bennington and continued to practice Obstetrics and Gynecology for several decades.
Dr. Flood was a member of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American Medical Society and the Vermont Medical Society.
In 1997, Dr. Flood was recognized by the Vermont State Legislature, celebrating 50 years of medical service. He continued with a Gynecology practice for a few more years, until his retirement in 2003 after a total of 55 years in practice.
Immediate survivors include four children, Bonnie Flood Chez of Tampa, FL, William Flood Jr (Maria) of Chesapeake Beach, MD, Kim Flood Asprinio (David) of Greenwich, Ct, and Tim Flood of North Bennington, VT; three grandchildren, Elizabeth, Michael and Eric Asprinio and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral will be held from St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in North Bennington on Tuesday, September 13, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered.
There will be no calling hours.
Private committal services will take place at the family lot in St. Johns Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
