Warren William ”Bill or Billy” Mason, Jr., 95 of N. Pownal, VT, passed away at his home surrounded by his family on January 15, 2025. He was born in N. Adams, MA on November 12, 1929, the son of William W. and Doris (Lamb) Mason Sr. He was a graduate of Williamstown High School. Billy married Mary Louise Palmer on May 1, 1971 in the Pownal United Methodist Church.
Billy was a farmer his whole life, beginning as a child at Cedar Hill Farm, his family’s dairy farm in Pownal, VT. They had one of the first milking parlors in Vermont. In 1967 the farm was sold and he moved to a small farm in N. Pownal, VT. Through the years he worked his land and continued doing farm related jobs for area farmers including Cedar Hill Farm. He liked taking care of the animals on the farm and he really enjoyed making and eating maple syrup.
Billy was a quiet frugal man who couldn’t stand waste. He loved repurposing things and tinkering. He had an extensive hubcap collection which he had built up just from hubcaps that somehow found their way to his property. Billy loved history whether it was local or national, and was a ember of the Pownal Historical Society. He had extensive knowledge of all United States involved wars.
Billy was known for having pockets full of chocolate which he didn’t often share. He was a fan of AM radio and loved watching westerns and war movies. He liked listening to music and was often heard whistling a tune. He enjoyed gardening and old tractors and could regularly be seen riding his tractors. He was a member of the Pownal United Methodist Church and the Pownal Valley Swinging Seniors.
Billy is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary Louise Mason; his daughter, Louise E. (Brian K. Violette) Mason of Bennington, VT, two brothers; Anson A. (Jaqueline) Mason of Pownal, VT and James R. Mason of North Adams, MA and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a sister and brother-in-law, Jane and Charles Barker of Fort Myers, Fla. He also had a special cousin, Bobby Utman who he enjoyed spending time with.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday January 25, 2025, at 2:00 PM at the Pownal United Methodist Church. Friends may call at the church on Saturday January 25, 2025, from 1:00 PM
until the time of the service. Burial will take place in Oak Hill Cemetery in Pownal in the spring.
