Walter L. Van Der Kar Sr.

Walter Lee Van Der Kar Sr., 88, of Manchester Center, VT died peacefully Tuesday September 29, 2020 at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington after a long illness.

He was born in Pittsfield, MA December 30, 1931. He was the son of the late Harold A. and Dorothy (Rice) Van Der Kar. He received his early education in Hoosick Falls, NY and Lanesboro, MA and was a graduate of Pittsfield High School in Pittsfield, MA. He later completed advanced training in Design Engineering from Bridgeport Engineering and the Colonial School of Design.

Walter was a United States Army veteran of the Korean War. He was wounded in battle and was awarded the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart.

He married the former Rosemarie D'Agostino on July 23, 1955. They built their home in Trumbull, CT where they lived for 42 years.

For 25 years Walter managed the Electrical Design Group at Perkin-Elmer Corp. in Norwalk, CT.

Walter and Rosemarie retired to Kissimmee, Florida where they lived for twenty years. Walter volunteered as the course ranger at the Kissimmee Bay Country Club. In addition to traveling the world with Rosemarie, he enjoyed playing golf, and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also enjoyed motorcycles. Walter and Rosemarie recently moved to Manchester Center, VT to be closer to family.

Patriarch of the Van Der Kars, Walter was proud of his family and was loved by all. Survivors include his wife Rosemarie Van Der Kar of Manchester Center, VT; two sons Walter Lee Van Der Kar Jr. and his wife Vickie of Columbus, Ohio and William Harold Van Der Kar and his wife Sarah of Danby, VT; four grandchildren William, Matthew and James Van Der Kar, Marie Van Der Kar Gray and one step-grandson Aidan Burrows; five great grandchildren Finnegan, Bodhi, Theodore and Halina Van Der Kar and Sophie Gray.

At the request of Mr. Van Der Kar, services will be private and held at the convenience of the family.
