Vito Charles Salvato, whose work as an aeronautical engineer took him around the globe, but whose home in Winhall, Vermont gave him the peace he craved, died on May 2, 2022.
Vito was born April 29, 1935, to Anthony and Angelina Imondi Salvato, in Brooklyn, NY. As a boy he loved attending Tony Bennett concerts at the Paramount Theater. He graduated from the Academy of Aeronautics in 1956. While working full time Vito returned to school and earned an engineering degree from Drexel University in 1960.
After graduation Vito stayed in the Philadelphia area, then moved to New Jersey. He became what is known in his field as a job shopper, or independent contractor, applying his skill in stress analysis at many different firms for high-visibility projects, including the Hubble telescope and the Black Hawk helicopter. The opening scenes of "The Young Lions," a movie about WW2 soldiers, inspired him to try skiing, and the sport became a passion.
His love for skiing also took him around the world. Austria, Canada and Italy provided Continental ski adventures, while Aspen and Snowbird were favorite destinations in the US. He bought a home in Winhall, Vermont, in 1983, and later designed and built a home on nine acres with a view of Stratton Mountain there. He enjoyed hosting family members there in all seasons.
Twice divorced, Vito wondered if lifelong love would elude him. That all changed when he met Linda Beher. By 2010 he had invited her to share life with him in Vermont. The couple enjoyed skiing at Stratton Mountain, tending the perennial gardens at his home in Winhall, and entertaining friends.
Vito is survived by daughters Lisa DeLuca of Swanzey, NH, and Stacy Mirmina of Milford CT; their husbands Tom DeLuca and Paul Mirmina III; grandchildren Marsi Mirmina of New Hampshire; Krista Mirmina Garcia (Thomas) of Norwalk, CT; Shelley Mirmina Siperas (Matthew) of North Haven, CT; Paul Mirmina IV of Milford, CT; and Jennifer Karpf of Pennsylvania. Five great-grandchildren also survive him. His brother Salvatore C. Salvato predeceased him.
Cremation will be private. Condolences may be shared at www.maharandsonfuneralhome.net
