Velta L. Thayer (Leonard)

November 13, 1932 — March 27, 2016

Velta L. Thayer, 83, a resident of Cyr Court in Bennington died Sunday March 27, 2016 at her residence following a long illness. With the help of many loving caregivers Velta was able to remain in her home.
She was born in Bennington, VT November 13, 1932. She was the daughter of the late Ralph and Alma (LaPointe) Leonard. Velta received her education in Bennington and was a graduate of Bennington High School. She later graduated from Castleton State Teachers College.
She married Philip J. Thayer on May 26, 1956 at Saint Francis de Sales Church in Bennington. Mr. Thayer died July 2, 1982.
Mrs. Thayer taught kindergarten and first grade in the Bennington school system for 32 years retiring in 1995. She was a devoted mother and grandmother. Her family was her main interest.
Survivors include her children, Brian Thayer and his wife Stacey of Phoenix, Arizona, Michelle Jones and her husband David of Manahawkin, New Jersey and Shereen Cameron and her companion Drew Totten of Bennington, VT; Six grandchildren, Alec and Taylor Cameron, Zachary and Natalie Jones and Lauryn and Hayley Thayer and a great grandson, Olyver Thayer; Three sisters, Marion Noyes, Eva O'Dell and Shirley Carroll and two brothers, Ralph and Nelson Leonard along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was pre-deceased by four sisters, Louise Peacock, Barbara Baker, Beatrice Olin and Beulah Racicot.
The funeral will be held from the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Thursday March 31 at 10:30 a.m. with a prayer and then from Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church at 11:00 a.m. where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered.
The burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Wednesday March 30 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.
