Tommaso Daniele Rendino

September 22, 1941 — March 12, 2022

NORTH BENNINGTON-
Tommaso Daniele Rendino, 80, died on March 12, 2022, ten days after being diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer. He met the immense challenge surrounded by his loving family and with his trademark humor. He was born on September 22, 1941. He was married to Elizabeth Ann (Smith) Rendino, who died last year, just before their 58th wedding anniversary.

Tommaso is survived by their four children: Marcantonio Vito Rendino and his spouse Annie and three children, Aidan, Grady, and Maeve of Burlington, VT; Gennaro Rendino and his spouse, Joanne and their daughter Rebekah of Horseheads, NY; Salvatore Carmello Rendino and his spouse Sylvia De La Torre and their daughter, Isabella of Yonkers, NY; Maria Margherita Scully and her daughter, Kiera of North Bennington.

Tommaso was born in Torrington, CT to Dominic and Margaret (Rinaldi) Rendino, who predeceased him. He was the oldest of two children. His younger brother, Leonard ("Lenny"), also predeceased him.
Tommaso attended College of the Holy Cross, Class of 1963, where he got a hell of a Jesuit education, through sometimes stiff anti-Italian headwinds. He did this, in a style that he maintained during his whole life: choosing either to not dignify it with a response " or, when a response was required, calmly being very clear that it would not be tolerated. Heritage and culture " Italian and otherwise " were to be remembered, celebrated and shared with any and all.

He found his calling as a Federal Probation Officer, working in Connecticut, Vermont, and Georgia. And as a critical liaison between the US Federal Government, and the Canadian RCMP (Mounties) " which resulted in several high profile criminals being brought to justice, on both sides of the border. In 1974 he was selected as recipient of the Richard F. Doyle Award, the Federal Probation Officers Association's highest honor, established in 1963 "to recognize and honor a Federal probation officer who through his own initiative has made outstanding and significant contributions to his field of endeavor." There are some hair-raising stories " of simply and steadfastly insisting on doing what was right.

Upon retirement, he turned full"time to what he loved most: walking, gardening (the greenest of thumbs), mushrooming, baking, reading, and talking with anyone and everyone he came across on his daily forays. He even became a fairly good cook (to match his legendary wine-making skill) " much to the amazement of those who remember Swamp Soup. Also to the joyful amazement of his wife and children, he transformed from a "spare the rod" father, to a "spoil the child" grandpa. Mostly, wherever he went, he made what was most important to him: Family. Blood-related or otherwise, Tommaso leaves a large family " which, as we all apply his example, only grows.

A funeral mass at St. John the Baptist Church for Tommaso will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the following: Village School of North Bennington (library program), Food Shelf at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church (North Bennington), or through the office of Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
