Thomas F. "Tom" Hyland, Sr. age 94, a resident of White Creek, NY and more recently of the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington.
We are sad to report the passing of our father, grandfather, friend, Tom Hyland on June 14, 2016 at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington. Tom died peacefully, surrounded by his family.
He was born September 13, 1921 in Lowell, MA and later moved to North Bennington, VT. He was the son of the late Kathy and Thomas Hyland. Tom was a decorated World War II Army Veteran who served in Germany and France.
He married the former Peggy Stossell in 1946, and they had been married 70 years. She predeceased him. Tom retired from Johnson Control in Bennington, Vermont in 1983.
He enjoyed horse racing, playing cards, and being with his family. Tom was a member of the VFW in Bennington for many years.
Tom and Peggy had three children: Patty (Peter) Martin of White Creek, NY, Donna Jones of Methuen, MA. Tom is predeceased by one son, Thomas Hyland, Jr. He leaves eight grandchildren; seven great grandchildren and two great great grandsons.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday morning, at the All Faiths Chapel at the Vermont Veterans Home, 325 North Street, Bennington at 11:00AM, with the Rev. James Holden, officiating. Interment will take place privately at the convenience of the family.
There are no calling hours scheduled.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and left at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home in Bennington, Vermont.
