Theodore Thaddeus "Ted" Toole Jr.

July 3, 1922 — December 17, 2016

Theodore Thaddeus Toole, Jr. died peacefully on December 17, 2016 at Crescent Manor Nursing Home in Bennington, Vermont, shortly after being with family most of the day. He was 94 and had endured Parkinson's Disease with dignity and grace for well over a decade.

Ted was born on July 3, 1922 in Columbus, Ohio to Theodore T. Toole and Stella Lawler Toole. Together with his siblings, Joan and John, the family eventually settled in the suburbs of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In early childhood, Ted was stricken with polio. His father rented a summer house on the Jersey shore with his World War I bonus money and exercised every day on the beach with his son. Ted, in his own words, "went from slowest to fourth fastest at Waldron Academy" (never volunteering how many were in his class).

Ted attended the University of Notre Dame and was graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. In 1942, he enlisted in the Marines and as a second lieutenant, was a member of the Amphibious Reconnaissance Battalion, Fleet Marine Force Pacific. For his actions as a "frogman" off Tinian Island in the Marianas, Ted was awarded the Silver Star.

Ted married Ellen "Nina" O'Shaughnessy on April 7, 1951 and they raised four children of whom he was most proud: Thad, Ellen, Kevin and Chris. He enjoyed a successful business career in marketing and sales, with positions of responsibility with Bloomingdales, Hemphill, Co., Burlington Industries, Singer Fidelity, Dow Chemical Co, Upjohn Pharmaceutical, Agrow, Asgrow Mandeville, Creative Tools, Inc. and Green Mountain Marble Co.

In 1972, when he became President of Asgrow Mandeville, then located in Cambridge, New York, Ted moved his family, which had already moved many times, to Dorset, Vermont, where, generally, they have been ensconced ever since. The family became parishioners of St. Paul Catholic Church and members of the Dorset Field Club.

When Ted initially retired, he drove Nina and everybody around him crazy with "to do" lists and so assumed a part-time associate position selling menswear at the Brooks Brothers outlet in Manchester, Vermont. He was still there sixteen years later when he retired a second time. Ted thoroughly enjoyed people and always emphasized that a good salesmen listens.

Ted is survived by his devoted wife Nina, of Dorset, Vermont, with whom he enjoyed 65 years of marriage, son Thad Toole and his wife Becky, of Exton, Pennsylvania, daughter Ellen Toole, of New York, New York, son Kevin O'Toole and his wife Nancy, of Dorset, Vermont, and son Chris O'Toole, of Boca Raton, Florida. He also leaves two grandchildren who adored him, Thad Toole, of Exton, Pennsylvania, and Caroline Toole, of Portland, Oregon.

A Liturgy of Christian Death will take place at Christ Our Savior (St. Paul Catholic Church) at 398 Bonnet Street in Manchester, Vermont on Thursday, December 29, 2016 at 1:00 pm., followed by a reception at the residence at 168 Meadow Lane in Dorset. Internment at Arlington National Cemetery is in the process of being scheduled. Arrangements are under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.
