Susan Ellen Reiss

March 27, 1957 — April 2, 2021

Susan ("Susie") Reiss of Arlington, 64, passed away peacefully at home on April 2, 2021 following a long illness.

Born March 27, 1957 in Newark, New Jersey to Dr. Norman and Maxine (Herman) Reiss, Susie was a 1979 graduate of Bennington College. Following a successful career as a chef at various southern Vermont restaurants, she became the head of the Music Library at her alma mater, a position she held for 28 years until her retirement in 2020. Throughout her tenure at the College, Susie earned the respect of her colleagues and the love of the students with whom she crossed paths, many of whom stayed in touch with her over the years following their graduation.

Susie was the founder and violinist of The Dorset Trio, which played area weddings and services for over 24 years. She was also an avid birder and nature photographer, and conducted bird walks at Bennington College for students and the community.

Her artistic accomplishments extended to her participation with the Sage City Symphony, and her stage appearances with The Dorset Players. As a member of The Players, Susie appeared in many productions over a more than twenty-five year span, and won a Golden Circle Award for Favorite Actress in a Leading Role for her portrayal of Alice Sycamore in You Can't Take It With You.

In addition to her parents, Susie is survived by her husband, Richard Jurewicz, her brothers Eric (Jane Thomas) Reiss and Kevin (Kathye) Reiss, her stepbrother David (Marcy) Kirshenbaum, her nieces Jillian and Ellie, her nephews George (Katie Lee), Alex, Ethan, and Jeffrey, and many friends.

She was predeceased by her stepmother Elaine Reiss and her stepsister Mindy Kirshenbaum.

At Susie's request, there will be no services at this time. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date following the pandemic.

If friends desire, contributions in memory of Susan Reiss may be made to her favorite animal welfare organizations, PETA and the World Wildlife Fund; the Second Chance Animal Center in Arlington, VT; or the Manchester or Bennington Hospice Annual Fund of the Visiting Nurses Association and Hospice of the Southwest Region of Vermont through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.

Her family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of the Cancer Center at Southwest Vermont Medical Center and the Visiting Nurses Association and Hospice of the Southwest Region of Vermont for their compassionate care throughout Susie's illness.
