STUART LIBBY
BENNINGTON, VERMONT
Stuart Libby, age 81, a resident of Morgan St. in Bennington, died on Sunday February 12,
2017, at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington.
He was born in Portland, Maine on November 1, 1935, and was the son of the late Merton W. and Lucy (Goodwin) Libby. He received his education in Maine and graduated from the University of Maine, Orono, in 1958 with a BS Degree in Chemistry. While at the University he participated in and graduated from the ROTC Program. Following graduation, he entered the U. S. Army as a 2nd Lieutenant in January 1959 and served until December 1960. He was stationed at Ft. McClellan and Ft. Hood. He was discharged from the U.S. Army Reserve on June 14, 1973.
On June 14, 1958 he married the former Nathalie Shea in So. Portland, ME. Mrs. Libby survives.
They relocated to Bennington in the 1970's , and he took a job with Tansitor Electronics in Bennington. Mr. Libby had developed two patents while working at Tansitor, one of which was for the Super Tan capacitor which became Tanistor's major source of income.
He was serving as Vice President for Research and Development at the time of his retirement in 2000.
In 2003, he began work as the Reference Librarian Assistant at the Bennington Free Library where he also substituted at the Circulation Desk. He retired from the Library in December 2016.
He enjoyed stamp collecting, and was a member of the Green Mountain Stamp Society. He was a Civil War buff and had visited many of the battlefields over the years. He enjoyed doing his family genealogy as well. He was member of the former Catamount Gadabouts Square Dance Club.
Mr. Libby is survived by his wife of 58 years. He has two sons: Brett M. and his wife Gale Libby of Hoosick Falls, NY and Cole G. and his wife Julie Solomon Libby of Albany, NY. Mr. Libby also has seven grandchildren: Nathaniel, Max, Jacqueline, Zachary, Marni, Jarred, and Isabella. He also has an "almost sister", Judy Burnham and her husband Allen of Gray, ME and one cousin, Carleen Nelson of Clinton, ME.
Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St. Bennington on Thursday,
February 16, 2017 from 4:00PM until 6:00PM.
A memorial service will be planned for the spring. Interment will take place in Park Lawn Cemetery in Bennington.
Memorial contributions in his honor may be made to Bennington Free Library, the Bennington Rescue Squad, or the Charity of One's Choice.
