Shirley M Mulligan

January 14, 1923 — March 20, 2020

Shirley May (Gifford) Mulligan, a long-time resident of Cambridge, NY died Friday, March 20th at the age of 97.
Born in East Haven, CT, Shirley was a graduate of the Middlesex School of Nursing, Middletown, CT. She also received her bachelors in nursing from Wagner College, Staten Island, NY. Shirley was an instructor at the Henry W. Putnam Memorial Hospital School of Practical Nursing, Director of Nursing at Brattleboro Retreat, and later Director of the Mary McClellan School of Practical Nursing in Cambridge, NY where she and her husband John made their home.
She and John were married in 1965 and lived on the Rolling Hills Farm in Cambridge that had been in John's family for generations.

Shirley was an avid volunteer. The spirit of community service was instilled her through her parents Ray and Lucy Gifford who were very involved in their Bondville, VT community.

Shirley joined the Order of the Eastern Star at the age of 19 and was still a member in good standing at the time of her death. She was a member in the Jamaica, Vermont and Cambridge Valley Chapters where she had been Grand Electra. She was also the Grand Representative to Mississippi and to participate. Shirley was deeply involved in her church and its activities and over the years held officer positions in the United Women Methodist organization. She and John were supporting members of the Agricultural Stewardship Association in Greenwich, NY. Most recently Shirley was a weekly volunteer at the Greenwich Health Center and could often be seen greeting and helping those people who entered the facility. She cherished her garden and her cats Fluff and Grub.

Shirley leaves behind many beloved community members and very close friends and is survived by her niece, Rita Allen Newcomb and her family. Although Shirley and John did not have children of their own, Shirley had many beloved people who referred to her as "Mom" and "Grandma".

Shirley requested that her ashes be spread on her property in Cambridge, and also that donations in leu of flowers be sent to The Centers for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington, Vermont. Shirley enjoyed being there and really appreciated the staff and the work they continue to do. https://svhealthcare.org/support-us/give-now/index.html
