Shirley G. Dayton (Grange)

May 9, 1932 — March 12, 2018

Shaftsbury, VT

Shirley Dayton, a resident of Shaftsbury, died the 12th of March at her home on Crosier Road, surrounded by family.

Born Shirley Grange in 1932 in Adams, MA, she was an honors graduate of Northfield Mt. Hermon School, Mt Holyoke College (BS in Plant Science and Chemistry, 1953), and Wellesley College (MS in Biology, 1955). She married David Dayton in 1955, and they settled in Acton MA for 46 years, where they raised their five children. In 2005 Shirley and David moved to Bennington, VT, and in 2016 they moved up to Shaftsbury.

After her children were grown, Shirley worked as a teacher at the Resource Center in the Acton-Boxboro Regional High School for twenty years, helping many young students deal with learning difficulties.

Shirley was an extraordinary wife, mother, and grandmother, with an unexcelled capacity for love. In her quiet way, she took care of everyone around her, influencing and loved by many souls outside of her own family. She loved to read and had a wit, intelligence, and sense of adventure that flashed out everywhere. She went for her first motorcycle ride at 65, and at the age of 80, she strapped on a helmet and went zip-lining.

She is survived by her husband, David, daughter Dawn and husband Peter King of Shaftsbury, daughter Carolyn and husband Sam Creech of Horse Shoe, NC, son Gregory and wife Debra of Arlington, TX, and son Bruce and wife Rebecca of Jamesville, NY. She was predeceased by a dearly beloved daughter, Shelley, in 2010. She is also survived by Shelley's husband, Conworth, grandchildren Heather, Jessica, Erin, Michael, Samantha, David, Abigail, and Ted, and great-grandchildren Virginia, Arthur, Natalie, and Declan.

In honor of Shirley's love of literature, memorial gifts may be made to one's local library. Mahar and Sons Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.
