Scott Samuel Shays, 57, a resident of Scott Street, Hoosick Falls, NY, died peacefully on Wednesday, April 20, 2016 at his residence surrounded by his family.
Born in Bennington, Vermont on November 1, 1958 he was the son of the late Harold Joseph Shays and Norma Jean (Clayborn) Shays who survives. Scott received his education in the Bennington schools and was a graduate of Mt. Anthony Union High School and also later attended Southern Vermont College
Scott served 23 years in the United States military, 14 months in the U. S. Navy and the rest of the time in the U. S. Army/Vermont National Guard. Scott retired with the rank of SFC. Scott was deployed to Kuwait in 2005-2006 as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
He was employed at Mack Molding Company until the time of his illness.
Scott was a member of VFW Post 1332 in Bennington. He enjoyed motorcycle riding, NASCAR racing and time spent with his grandchildren.
Survivors include four children, Michelle (George) Wood of Myrtle Beach, SC, Jay (Collette) Arnold of Hoosick Falls, Chris (Korey) Arnold of White Creek, NY and Misty (Adam Corrow) of Hoosick Falls; eleven grandchildren, Daniel, Shay, Evan, Owynn, Shayne, Faith, Elijah, Kennedy, Allie, Lucas and Phoebe; his mother, Norma Shays of Pownal; his maternal grandfather, Charles Betit of Perrysville, OH; a sister Anna Marie (Roger) Livingston of Bennington; a brother, Cory Lee (Mai Ly) Shays of Shaftsbury; a very special uncle, Chuck Clayborn of Pownal; a companion, Phyllis Arnold of Hoosick Falls and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his father Scott was predeceased by a brother, Timothy J. Shays.
Friends may call at the funeral home Friday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. A prayer service will be offered by Rev. Robin Greene at 5:30 p.m.
Private committal services will take at Oak Hill Cemetery in Pownal at the convenienceof the family. Should friends desire memorial contributions in Scott Shays memory may be made to the Vermont Veterans Home Activities Fund, 325 North Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
