Ruth A. Welch (Vanorman)

September 14, 1950 — June 22, 2019

Ruth A. Welch, 68, a resident of Water Street, North Bennington, died Saturday, June 22, 2019 at the Vermont Veterans Home following a long illness.

Born in Bennington on September 14, 1950, she was the daughter of the late William and Thelma (Bentley) Van Orman. She received her education in the North Bennington and Bennington schools and was a 1968 graduate of Mt. Anthony Union High School. She later received an Associate's Degree from CVC before receiving her Bachelors from Johnson State College and her Masters from Southern New Hampshire University.

In earlier years Ruth worked at Sunrise Day Care in Bennington. She later was a faculty member at Bennington Elementary School where she taught first grade for many years prior to her illness.

Ruth married John J. Welch at the East Arlington Federated Church on February 14, 1999. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Shaftsbury.

Ruth always enjoyed reading and was a past member of the Red Hat Society.

Survivors include her husband, John Welch of North Bennington; three children, Russell Ellis of Virginia, Rachel Tedwell (Michael Everall) of Bennington and Richard (Grace) Ellis of Portland, OR; two grandchildren, Haley and Olivia; a stepdaughter, Jennifer (Arthur) Ussery of Chula Vista, CA; a step-son, Jason Welch of North Carolina; two brothers, Philip (Sandy) VanOrman of Virginia and John VanOrman (Mary) of Bennington; a very special friend, Jean Jones of North Bennington and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A celebration of Ruth's life will be held from the Shaftsbury Methodist Church on Saturday, July 6, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. with a gathering to be held following the service.
