Mrs. Ruth M. Coronios Ruby (nee Covert), age 96, died on April 1, 2017.
Ruth was born in Upper Montclair, NJ on March 12, 1921, the daughter and only child of Herbert Blakely and Edith Geistweit Covert. She was a graduate of Montclair High School Class of 1939.
After receiving her Bachelor of Arts from St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY in December 1942, Ruth was accepted into the first class of the United States Marine Corps Women's Reserve. She attained the rank of Corporal, made a few lifelong friends, and was extremely proud that she "freed a Marine to fight" during World War II.
After her service, she returned to St. Lawrence University to earn her Master's degree in English Education, as well most of the hours required for Director of Religious Education
,
and married James D. Coronios. Ruth began her teaching career at Norwood-Norfolk High School in Norwood, NY, then after a divorce, moved to Long Island for a position at Wantagh High School, where she taught for thirteen years. She and her husband, Lewis Ruby, decided to move to Vermont
, where she taught
English at Mt. Anthony Union High School in Bennington, VT for eleven years, including two years as Department Coordinator. Mrs. Ruby retired in 1985 after twenty-five-years of encouraging good grammar, appreciation of literature in all its forms, and effective communication.
While still teaching, Mrs. Ruby acted as area coordinator for AIFS, placing hundreds of foreign exchange students from all over the world in area homes for a semester or a year. Several of these students maintained contact with her for years afterward.
Ruth and Lew moved to Williamstown, MA where she was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church and volunteered with The Clarke and Williamstown Theater. After retiring from teaching, Ruth became an active volunteer with the first Hospice group in Berkshire County.
In 1999 after a severe illness, Ruth lived briefly in Chatham, NY with her daughter, Carol, then decided to move to the new Fillmore Pond senior living facility in Bennington. With her health and mobility declining, she spent her last few years at Bennington Health and Rehabilitation.

Her grandchildren, Michelle E. Doyle, Christopher M. Doyle, Catherine M. Doyle, Martin C. Doyle, Christina M. Coronios, James L. Coronios and Eric Looney; Her great grandchildren: Jessica J. Doyle, Mackenzie A. Doyle, Amanda M. Doyle, Michael G. Doyle, Eleuteria A. Carranza-Doyle and Benjamin K.J. Doyle and a great great grandson, Lucas Holt. She was pre-deceased by her husbands, James D. Coronios and Lewis P. Ruby, and her grandson, Michael E. Doyle.
At Ruth's request, there will be no services. Interment will take place at Mount Hebron Cemetery, Upper Montclair, NJ, where she will join her parents, Bert and Edith Covert.
