Ronald James Higgins, 80, a resident of Beach Road in Woodford, VT, died Wednesday September 6, 2023 at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington surrounded by his family. He was born in Bennington, VT May 12, 1943. He was the son of the late Joseph E. Higgins and Josephine (Racicot) Higgins. He received his education in Bennington and was a graduate of Bennington Catholic High School. He first received his associate's degree in business from Saint Joseph’s College in Bennington where he met his future wife Maureen and later received his Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting from Bentley College in Boston, M.A. Ron served in the United States Army during Vietnam. He was a First Sergeant and received a Bronze Star. He married the former Maureen Simon on September 3, 1966, in North Adams, MA. Maureen died December 31, 2012. For many years, Ron served as Town Clerk and Treasurer for the Town of Woodford. He took great pride in the Woodford community. In earlier years, Ron was Chief Accountant at both CB Sports in Bennington and Rugged Wear in Rhode Island. Ron enjoyed reading, working in his yard, history and visiting historical places. He loved socializing with his friends and family, was an animal lover and was a good storyteller. Family was his pride and joy and he took every opportunity to tell everyone how proud he was of them. Survivors include his children, Jennifer Sandquist and her husband, John Sandquist Jr. of Bennington and Timothy Higgins and his wife Karen of Kingston, N.H. A granddaughter, Tia Briere (Jason West) of Bennington and a great-grandson Jameson West. A brother, Daniel Higgins of Bennington and a sister Mary Ellen Dupuis (Larry) of Bennington. Two sisters-in-law, Barbara Higgins of Bennington and Mary Chalifoux of Cape Cod, MA along with several very special nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by two brothers, Joseph and Alan Higgins, his In-laws and two brother-in-laws. The funeral will be held from the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Tuesday September 12, at 10:15 a.m. with a prayer and then from Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church at 11:00 a.m. where the Liturgy of Christian Death and burial will be offered. The burial will take place in the family lot at Saint John’s Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Monday September 11, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. If friends desire, contributions in memory of Ronald J.
