Robert A. Petitt Sr., 82, a resident of Niles School Road in Pownal, VT died peacefully on Wednesday September 21, 2016 following a long illness.
He was born in Pownal, VT January 1, 1934. He was the son of the late Thomas and Irene (Card) Petitt. He received his early education in Pownal and was a 1951 graduate of Williamstown High School in Williamstown, MA.
On January 4, 1952, Mr. Petitt joined the United States Navy and served his country during the Korean War.
He married the former Mary Z. (Weyers) on April 21, 1956 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Pownal, VT.
An accomplished and master craftsman, Bob worked for Local Union # 108 in Pittsfield, MA and was employed by David Tierney for many years. It was with great pride that Bob also built several homes and garages independently including the one he and his wife currently resided in. He was always willing to assist those in need and the first to lend a helping hand.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 13 and the Bennington Lodge of Elks # 567. Bob enjoyed bowling, golf, playing cards and spending time with his family. He and his wife Mary enjoyed wintering in Sarasota, FL for over 20 years.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Petitt of Pownal, VT, a son Robert A. Petitt, Jr. and his wife Wendy of North Bennington, and a daughter Pamela Trites and her husband Eric of Bennington. He was affectionately known as Poppy to his four grandsons Robert Trites of Bennington, Jeffrey Trites (fiancee Jessica Davis) of Burlington, Christopher Petitt (fiancee Erin Maroney) of Burlington and Curtis Petitt of Daytona Beach, FL. Siblings include a brother William Petitt (Barbara) of Pownal and two sisters Virginia LaCroix of Pownal and Jo-ann Hanson of Melbourne, FL. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Memorial Service to celebrate the life of Mr. Petitt will be held at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Wednesday September 28, 2016 at 1:00 p.m.
Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Wednesday from twelve noon until the time of the service.
