We were given the rare gift of having been blessed with the life of our beloved Robert (Bam) Hutchins, Jr.,48, and on March 31, 2018, he returned to be with our Lord and passed peacefully at his home, after courageously battling cancer, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Newport, Vermont and raised in Bennington. He received his education in local schools and is a graduate of Mt. Anthony Union High School and Hudson Valley Community College, and mastered various top level certifications in his field. He was employed currently at the Stafford Technical Center in Rutland, and had previously been a paint instructor at Plasan Manufacturing in Bennington. He was a talented, creative and skilled artisan in the field of welding, auto body, fabrication and custom painting. He owned and operated his business, Bam's Auto Works. He was an excellent teacher and mentor to his students, colleagues, and friends and he shared his passion for his craftsmanship both in the workplace and classroom, but also at his "shop" where many gathered on South Stream Road. Robert was a genuine, caring, thoughtful, and generous man who was extremely hardworking, and admired by so many in his community. Often referred to as MacGyver, one could call on him at anytime and he would be there for you to lend a helping hand, give advice, or more often than not, perform some heroic effort to make sure everyone was safe and well. He never turned anyone in need away, and gave of himself until his last breath.
He was an active, fun loving and easy going guy and enjoyed many adventures and free time with his family and friends at his cabin on Woodford Lake, fireside or lakeside; kayaking, hunting, ice fishing, snowmobiling and 4 wheeling. He was also an avid and competitive skier, and a boating and Harley Davidson enthusiast. He was a member of the Moose Family Club, and Woodford Lake Estates Association.
Robert will be missed dearly, remembered and loved forever. He is survived by his daughter, Lexi Ann Hutchins of Bennington, who meant the world to him, his parents, Robert and Nicole Hutchins, Sr. of Bennington, his sister, Elizabeth Hutchins Ferguson of Center Wilton, NH, his brother Charles Christopher (Melissa) Hutchins of Bennington, His fiancé, the love of his life, Tina Lewis of Bennington.
