NORTH BENNINGTON
Robert F. Gratton Sr., a resident of Water Street, North Bennington, died Monday, January 8, 2018 at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center following a brief illness.
Born in Bennington on May 16, 1929, he was the son of the late George Gratton Jr. and Alberta (Vachon) Gratton. Bob received his education in the Bennington schools and was a graduate of Bennington High School. He later attended Cheshire Academy in Cheshire Connecticut.
A veteran of the Korean War, Bob served in the U. S. Army from September 5, 1950 until June 22, 1952. He married the former Ruth Hurley in Bennington on June 29, 1957. Ruth died November 5, 2008.
In earlier years Bob was employed at the H. T. Cushman plant in North Bennington and later at Globe Union in Bennington. He later worked as a carpenter for various construction firms throughout the area.
An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. Bob was also a fan of the Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots and Green Bay Packers.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Lori Gratton of Pownal; a daughter, Sharon Gratton and her partner, Pat McKee of Arlington; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; his two caregivers and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Bob was predeceased by a son, Robert Gratton Jr. and by a brother and three sisters.
The funeral will be held from St. John the Baptist Church in North Bennington on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered.
At Mr. Gratton's request there will be no calling hours.
Burial will take place in the family lot in St. Johns Cemetery, North Bennington.
