Richard Root, age 76, a resident of Bennington, died on Sunday, January 1, 2017 at his home surrounded by his loving family, following a long illness.
Richard was born on May 4, 1940. He is the son of the late Smith and Rita Hanley. Richard (Dick) received his hospital tech training in Virginia and then worked at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington for over forty years.
He married Luella Connolly on May 14, 1965.
Richard spent many years in the National Guard and coaching and umpiring local youth teams. He was an avid bowler.
Richard and his wife cared for the elderly in their home and later became foster parents for over one hundred forty children for fourteen years, and later returned to caring for adults in their home. He enjoyed sports, horse racing, and trips to the casino. He looked forward to time spent with his grandchildren, and sitting by a nice warm fire, mowing his lawn, or just relaxing in the sunshine. He was a devoted, kind and loving man to his family and his many friends he met on his path of life. He will be loved and forever missed by all.
Besides his wife of fifty-one years, he is survived by his son Greg and his significant other Jean Andrew, his daughter Bonnie and her husband Shawn Stevens and their children; Joshua Root and his wife Samantha, Dillon, Cody, Kylee and Casey Stevens and his great grandson, Jackson. He leaves two brothers: Frank and Peter Hanley. Richard is predeceased by his sister Linda and his adopted daughter Angela, who died in 2014.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2017, at 1:00PM at the First Baptist Church, 601 Main Street in Bennington. Interment will take place privately by his family.
Friends may call at the church on Saturday from 11:00 AM until the time of the service.
