Richard Thomas Liell

December 25, 1935 — February 24, 2021

Richard Thomas Liell passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday after a prolonged struggle with Parkinson's Disease. Richard was born on December 25, 1935, in Brooklyn, New York, the son of William and Lillian (O'Leary) Liell. He was raised in the same house in which his father was raised in the Park Slope neighborhood with his siblings William, Loretta and Theresa. After graduating from Manual Training High School in 1954 he attended the University of Southern California on a football scholarship where he played fullback.

Richard served in the Air Force and was stationed in Limestone Maine. He began his lifelong career in computer programming working for Bulova Watch Company before founding his own companies, including RT Liell Systems and Programming and MKI, inc., which eventually employed more than 50 people and provided accounting software for major corporations, notably in the motion picture industry. What his clients never knew was that MKI stood for Munchkin Kids Incorporated.

Richard married Sharon (née Weatherford) Wright on September 23, 1962 who predeceased him in 1984. He is predeceased by his sons Scott and Kurt and his grandson Richard William Liell. He is survived by his sons Richard Kenneth, James and Kevin Liell and grandchildren Casey, Carlea, Sarah, Katharine and Macaila. He is also survived by his long-time companion, B. Virginia Warren.

Richard was always athletic and active and enjoyed hiking, biking and jumping out of planes. He enjoyed playing bridge with friends and family which continued even through the last year. Richard resided for the last twenty years in Manchester, Vermont and was active in his community through the Newcomers organization and Neighbor to Neighbor where he volunteered to drive those in need to medical appointments.

Arrangements are being handled by Mahar Funeral Home at 385 Bonnet Street in Manchester Center, Vermont. A visitation will be held from 3:00-6:00 on Saturday, February 27, 2021.
