NORTH BENNINGTON-
Richard A. "Dick" Farrara, age 82, died peacefully at his home following a prolonged illness, surrounded by loved ones on June 11, 2022.
He was the son of Anthony (Ricky) and Katrine (Tini) of Eagle Bridge, NY and is survived by his wife of 33 years, Penny Hawkins-Farrara and step son Jeffrey Hawkins, former wife Donna Farrara of 25 years, five children, Stacy Rogers (Mickey), Mark Farrara (Beth), Robert Farrara, Nicholas Farrara (Kim), Leslee Toomey (Pat), and was predeceased by a son, Matthew and step daughter April Hawkins. Also survived by twelve grandchildren and four great grandchildren as well as siblings Robert, Margaret, Toni, Raymond, and Alyce.
Richard spent his early years working around his neighborhood in Eagle Bridge mowing lawns, shoveling snow and performing odd jobs and was able to save enough money for one year of education at Siena College. When his money ran out, his father said "you can go to any school you want, as long as it's free".
Richard fulfilled that by securing a position at the Maritime College in New York City, graduating with a degree in Engineering in 1960. Richard loved to tell stories, especially about his days aboard ship fulfilling his summer obligations for the Merchant Marine Academy. He completed his Masters of Engineering degree at RPI in 1965, and enjoyed a long and successful career at Benet Laboratory at the Watervliet Arsenal.
Richard had a curiosity for life, surpassed only by a great intensity that he applied to all aspects of his life. He loved to play golf, watch his beloved Red Sox, and listen to music, especially Frank Sinatra and Andrea Bocelli. He was well traveled, spending his free time in places like Hawaii, the Dominican Republic, and Aruba, while his work also afforded him travel all around the US and Germany. He spent a year working in Australia teaching and training fellow engineers on his insights and breakthroughs on the topic of metal fatigue.
He spent his retirement years with his wife at his home in North Bennington receiving friends and family. He served many years on the vestry along with volunteering at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Bennington.
A "Celebration of Life" event is being planned for a later date.
