Richard H. Cook, a resident of Grandview Street, Bennington, strolled away from his earthly existence on Sunday, March 19, 2017 at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center following a long illness. He has joined his predeceased loved ones at the explicit command of his Maker.
Dick married the former Janet Schena on September 20, 1969. Janet predeceased him on December 25, 1986. Dick was also predeceased by his longtime companion, Marjorie "Tish" Barnes on November 14, 2014.
He was born in Bennington on November 27, 1946 to the late Harold and Evelyn (LeBlanc) Cook. Dick graduated from Bennington Catholic High School with highest honors in mathematics. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the US Air Force where he served his country in Oklahoma, Texas and Alaska. It is in Alaska where he enjoyed fishing and skiing, two of his lifelong passions.
Dick is survived by his daughter Renée Cook and her fiancée Justin Cash of Quechee, VT, two sisters, Kathy (Cook) DeLucco and her husband, Jay of South Burlington, VT, Carol (Cook) Wendell of Jupiter, Fl and his brother Jim Cook of Bennington, VT as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family would like to sincerely thank the Emergency Room and ICU medical teams at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington as well as Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH. Due to their exemplary care Dick and his family were able to enjoy a truly memorable time together. A heartfelt thanks to Fr. Hugh of North Bennington as well as Fr. Sam at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center for facilitating the renewal of Dick's spirituality.
The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Saturday, March 25, 2017 with calling hours from 11:00AM -12:00 PM followed by church service at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church at 12:30 p.m. where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered. Burial will take place at the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery in the spring.
