Rebecca Jean Sherman

June 9, 1970 — February 27, 2025

Rebecca Jean Sherman peacefully passed away in the company of her loved ones at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center on February 27, 2025. Throughout her 54 years of life, she brought laughter and light into the lives of those that knew her. Her quick wit, tenacity, and charismatic personality were always sure to conjure a smile.

She was born in Lowell, MA on June 9, 1970, the daughter of Linda Donaghue and the late Douglas Henry.

From a young age, Rebecca loved animals and developed close bonds with the many animals in her life. Her menagerie of pets ranged from chickens to dogs to horses. She was a talented gardener, home decorator, and crafter, with an affinity for birds, flowers, butterflies, – and most recently – decorative garden gnomes. She loved spending time outdoors whether it was at home on the porch, at a campsite, or on a deep-sea fishing boat. As an avid Patriots fan, she could often be found at home watching the game with her beloved dogs and her husband.
After earning her degree in nursing, Rebecca spent over two decades working as a Licensed Practical Nurse. She was passionate about providing high-quality care and bonded closely with countless patients during her years at the VA Clinic and the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington. She always went above and beyond, earning an award for exceptional performance from the VA Clinic.

Rebecca was a loving wife, bad@ss friend, and caring mother. She married William Sherman on May 27, 2017. She will be dearly missed by her family and her countless friends, coworkers, patients, and acquaintances. She is survived by her husband, William Sherman; her mother, Linda Donaghue; her eldest son, Dylan Avera; her daughter and son-in-law, Morgan and Oliver Avera; her youngest son, Mason Avera; her sister and brother-in-law Heather and Derrick Scholl; her brother and sister-in-law Nathan and Lindsay Dix; her many nieces and nephews; her step-children, Jasmine and Hunter; and her first grandchild, Aidan. Rebecca was predeceased by her father, Douglas Henry, both sets of grandparents, Edith Murphy and James Donaghue; Robert and Bibianne Henry, her Aunt Lillian Drapeau, and her uncle, Robert Donaghue, among others.
