Priscilla "Sookie" Butler, 88, a resident of Jefferson Heights in Bennington died Sunday December 10, 2017 at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center following a brief illness.
She was born in North Bennington, VT February 3, 1929. She was the daughter of the late Frank J. and Edith B. Legacy. Priscilla received her education in North Bennington and was the Salutatorian of the class of 1947 at the North Bennington High School. In 1949 she graduated from the Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse and later attended Russell Sage College where she received a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.
Priscilla married Gerald F. Butler on November 11, 1950 at the North Bennington Baptist Church.
For two years Priscilla was employed at Putnam Memorial Hospital as an operating room nurse and for four years was the Night Supervisor. She later taught Medical Terminology and Office Procedures at Southern Vermont College and for twelve years Priscilla was the Director of The School of Nursing at Putnam Memorial Hospital.
An avid golfer, Priscilla was a longtime member of the Mount Anthony Country Club where she recorded a hole in one. She also enjoyed playing weekly Bridge with some of her life-long friends. An accomplished musician, Priscilla enjoyed playing the piano and as a teenager she played the organ at the North Bennington Baptist Church. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, wife and best friend to her husband Jerry. While a member of the First United Methodist Church of Bennington for over 60 years, Priscilla along with her husband Jerry, served as Communion Steward and was President of the Couples Club.
Survivors include her husband of 67 years, Gerald F. Butler of Bennington; two sons and their wives, Mark and Millie Butler of Westborough, MA and Scott and Jan Butler of Oakland, California. Four grandsons, Daniel (Bel), Colby (Shannon) and Brian and Casey Butler. A nephew, Keith Morse and his wife Peggy of Colorado. She was pre-deceased by a sister Virginia Morse and her brother in law Leonard Morse.
The funeral will be held at the Second Congregational Church, 115 Hillside Street, Bennington on Friday December 15, at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Mary Lee Clark officiating. The family invites you to join them for a reception in Webster Hall at the church immediately following the service
The burial will take place in the family lot at Park Lawn Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
