Peter Michael Seward

Peter Michael Seward (1948-2021), resident of Bennington, VT, died Thursday, October 21, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center, following a long illness.
Born in Swampscott, Massachusetts, July 30, 1948, Peter was the son of the late Peter Augustine Seward and Sally (Wasil) Seward. After attending local elementary and high schools, Peter received a Bachelor of Science degree from University of Massachusetts, Amherst; and after serving a term in the Peace Corps in Venezuela, he went on to earn a Master of Arts degree in Journalism and continue doctoral studies at the University of
Colorado.
Peter was a well-respected professor at several universities before coming to settle in Bennington and teach at Southern Vermont College. These included the University of Colorado, Boulder, where he also served as Director of Continuing Education, the University of Mobile, Alabama, and Howard Payne University in Brownwood, Texas. He loved teaching and serving Bennington's Rotary Club as President and Treasurer, where his efforts for the community included scholarships for local students and the development of the "Splash Pad," a water playground for local children and adults who never left childhood behind. He loved spending time in conversation with friends and family, and working in his garden. He loved watching every loved-one and every plant grow and thrive.
Peter is survived by his sister, Dr. Ann Marie Seward Barry of Marblehead, Massachusetts; his long-time companion, Julie Smith; his two daughters: Laurel Seward Huerkamp, attorney, Richmond, Virginia, and Haven Denise Seward, accountant and business manager, Austin, Texas; and his six sons: Galen Peter Seward, medical nurse, Albany, Oregon; Nathan Seward, U.S. Air Force Overseas Contingency Operations specialist; Jonathan David Seward, hospital pharmacist, Bennington, Vermont; Anthony Israel Seward, medical scribe, Liverpool, New York; Benjamin Michael Seward, student and marine enthusiast, Bennington, Vermont; Peter Michael Seward, Jr., student and assistant supermarket manager, Bennington, Vermont. He also leaves five grandchildren: Chidi, Kai and Ash Seward of Oregon; Rainer Huerkamp of Virginia, and Ramona Seward of New York.
A memorial service for Peter will be held Saturday, November 27, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at Missionary Alliance Church, 198 Crescent Blvd, Bennington . All who knew him are invited to attend and share his family's memories of him.
