Peter H. Schaad

Dr. Peter H. Schaad, 87, of Southern Pines, NC passed away peacefully on Thur. Oct.18th, 2018 after a long illness. Dr. Schaad was born in Brooklyn N.Y. in 1931 to the late Albert F. Schaad and the late Phyllis Hanson Schaad. Peter was preceded in death by his brother, Albert Schaad. Surviving are his wife, Mary Anne Schaad, his three children, Perry Schaad(Sindy), Suzanne Kennedy(Craig) and Justin Schaad, his beloved grandchildren, William and Catherine Kennedy. He is also survived by his brother Richard Schaad (Joan), his sister Elaine Daglio and several nieces and nephews.

Peter earned a 2yr degree in Animal Husbandry from SUNY Cobleskill, after which he ran a small cattle farm in Valley Falls, NY until being drafted into the Korean War. Returning from the War, Peter enrolled in Cornell University. Dr. Schaad graduated from Cornell College of Veterinary Medicine in 1962. After graduation he and Mary Anne moved to Bennington, VT where he accepted a position as lead veterinarian at Green Mt. Park Racetrack which he held for the next 14 years. During this time, he purchased a portion of Fillmore Farms and opened Mt. Anthony Animal Hospital to treat both large and small animals. He specialized in Equine Medicine and was well know throughout the New England area as an expert diagnostician and surgeon in this field. Peter was an entrepreneur at heart and built and operated Camelot Village until 1986. Dr. Schaad later resided in Hampstead, NH where he continued to practice Veterinary Medicine, opened and operated the Main Street Animal Hospital and Haverhill Animal Hospital as well as an Equine clinic and surgery facility at Rockingham Park in Salem, NH. Dr. Schaad was a licensed pilot and flew his plane to several racetracks in New England and New York State where he worked.

While living in Bennington he was a member of Mt. Anthony Country Club and the the Bennington Rotary Club. Peter was also a life member of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA); American Association of Equine Practictioners (AAEP); Aircraft Owners and Pilots Assoc. (AOPA). Dr. Schaad retired to Southern Pines, NC in 2000, a place he loved dearly. While in Southern Pines he became a member of the Moore County Driving Club and enjoyed his association with the horse community.

Interment will take place at the convenience of the family at Park Lawn Cemetery in Bennington, VT. There will be no calling hours at the request of the family. Online condolences may be made at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home website at www.maharandsonfuneralhome.net
