Peter Bulterman

Peter C. Bulterman, 72, passed away at Bennington Health & Rehabilitation Center in Bennington, VT, following a long illness. Peter was born in 1950 to Charles L. Bulterman and Hope Chambers Bulterman in Rye, NY and grew up in Darien, Connecticut. Peter was a graduate of the Kent School where he was active in many student clubs. He was a member of the Kent School’s wrestling and soccer teams, club hockey, and was coxswain for the crew team in small crossed oars and crossed oars. He attended the University of Denver in Denver, CO and later received a Master of Business Administration degree from Pace University in White Plains, NY. Peter had a passion for travel and began working in the travel industry like his father, Charles, who had a long career at KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. He worked in New York City as an assistant sales manager for Chandris Inc., a cruise‐line concern of New York and London. Later he and his father founded and operated a small travel company based in Atlanta, GA. Peter settled in Bennington, VT in 1995 and became an engaged member of the community. He served on the Board of Directors of the Turning Point Center, a recovery organization. He was also an active member of AA and served as a local and state-wide activist who helped to plan numerous events and Alcathons. He was a sponsor and friend to many in recovery and his 20+ years of sobriety was one of his greatest achievements. Peter was a member of the Vermont Workers’ Center and their universal health care efforts, which included lobbying for universal health care in the state capital of Montpelier, VT. He worked alongside his dear friend, Mary Gerisch, in helping to open and establish Bennington’s Kitchen Cupboard food bank. Peter was also a volunteer member of Bennington’s CAT-TV, helping to film and produce various interview programs. Peter was a committed parishioner of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Bennington. He was a licensed lector and served on the Outreach and other committees. He also served as part of the vestry and as the treasurer for an interim period at St. Peter’s. He was active in the Vermont Episcopal diocese and attended many state conventions, as well as the Training on Education for Ministry through the Diocese. Of all the outdoor activities that he enjoyed and excelled at – including golf, skiing, and tennis – Peter was most at peace on the water and was an avid sailor. He will be remembered as a spiritual person who enjoyed the continued discovery of wisdom in God and learning from others about their faith journeys. Peter is survived by his son, Alexander Bulterman Schein; his daughter, Whitney Anne Bulterman; his granddaughter, Kaia Mary Schein; his brother, Charles Frederick Bulterman; his niece, Lindsay Alison Cerasa; his nephew, Tyler James Bulterman; his grandnephew, Luke Cerasa; his grandnieces, Maddy and Chloe Cerasa, and numerous cousins and extended family. The family expresses a huge debt of thanks to the staff of Bennington Health and Rehab who cared for Peter over the past 4+ years with extraordinary thoughtfulness and grace. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2023, at 11 a.m. at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Bennington, VT.
