Nancy McDaniel Miller died on February 13th, 2022 at her home in Manchester Center, Vermont. She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on September 5th, 1929 to Delaplaine and Charlotte McDaniel.
Nancy graduated from Germantown Friends School in 1947, and from Swarthmore College in 1951. She met Frederick R. Miller, who had just graduated from Yale, and they married and settled in Philadelphia. They were married for 59 years and raised three children. While living in Philadelphia, Nancy studied to become a volunteer docent at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
The family moved to Connecticut in 1969 where Fred continued in banking, and Nancy, along with three friends, opened a retail gift shop in Middlebury, which they ran for twelve years. Nancy also served on a number of charitable and civic boards. She especially valued her twelve years of service on the board and as head of the women's committee of the Mattatuck Museum in Waterbury. During this time the Mattatuck grew from a house museum to a large building situated on the Green in Waterbury.
Her interest in art continued in Arizona where they lived following her husband's retirement. There she served on the board of the Tubac Center of the Arts and enjoyed painting lessons, bridge and golf. They returned to Philadelphia in 2006 where they lived at The Hill at Whitemarsh, which is situated near Nancy's childhood home.
Following her husband's death in 2011, Nancy moved to Manchester Center, Vermont and lived at Equinox Village. She was a member of the National Society of Colonial Dames and a member of Zion Episcopal Church.
She is survived by her three children; Susan Miller Clark, Stephen Robeson Miller and Elizabeth Rockwell Miller. Also two grandsons; Kyle S. Clark and Tyler R. Clark, and two great-granddaughters.
A funeral service for Nancy will be held on Saturday, February 26th, 2022 at 2:00pm at the Zion Episcopal Church in Manchester Center, Vermont. Interment will take place in the spring at Dellwood Cemetery in Manchester Center. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Southern Vermont Arts Center, through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home 328 Bonnet St. Manchester Center, VT 05255.
