Mindy M. Surdam, 48, of Bennington, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, March 22, 2024, after a brief illness with cancer. Mindy was born on March 17, 1976 to Meredith “Thumper” Surdam and Marie (Quackenbush) Decoff. Mindy was truly a heart of compassion and was known for her fun loving ways. Mindy touched the lives of everyone she came in contact with, with her warm generosity and infectious smile and laugh. Her memory will be kept alive through her family and friends, and her spirit will carry on through us all. Mindy’s love, laughter and sense of humor will be deeply missed. Mindy worked driving bus for Dufour Tours for many years, and for the last five years for the State of Vermont Highway Department, then transferring to the Department of Motor Vehicles. Mindy loved working for the State. After Mindy was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer, she spent the rest of her days with family and friends at her side. She gave it a good fight. Mindy is survived by her parents: Meredith (Thumper) Surdam of Woodford VT, and Marie Decoff (Andrew) of Stony Point NC; her brother Milo Surdam (Katherine) of Denver NC, sisters Carla Labonte (Brian) of Bennington VT, Megan Surdam (Tyler Livingston) of Shaftsbury VT, and Katrina Webster (Timothy) of Stratford VT. Mindy also leaves behind three nieces, Mikka, Kaya and Talia Surdam of Denver NC, three nephews, Eivin and Ezra Surdam of Shaftsbury VT, and Cody Toner of Arlington VT; two great nieces, Ava Toner of Arlington VT, and and Chloe Toner of Bennington VT; and two great nephews, Michael Toner of Bennington VT, and Asher Toner of Arlington VT; as well as several aunts, uncles, cousins and many, many friends. Mindy was predeceased by her grandparents, Ralph G. Quackenbush of Bennington VT and Leota Amundsen Quackenbush of Falmouth ME; and Milton and Madeleine Surdam of Bennington VT. A memorial service will be held at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home in Bennington VT on Friday, April 5, 2024 at 3pm, with calling hours from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Burial to be private at the convenience of the family. The family expresses gratitude to the cancer center, and friends and family that supported Mindy through her final days. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to her favorite charities; St. Jude’s Childrens Hospital, Shriners Hospital, or the Innocence Project through Mahar and Son Funeral Home.
