Michael J. McGuire, 83 of Shaftsbury, VT passed away at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington on Sunday July 9, 2023. Michael was born in Bennington, VT on March 12, 1940, the son of George and Dorothy McGuire. For many years Michael ran the Carpentry shop at Honeywell, formerly Allied Signal and Oak Matsui, in Hoosick Falls. Michael was an accomplished fisherman and loved to tell of his fishing adventures to anyone who would listen. They were numerous and impressive. Michael appeared in a Norman Rockwell painting, “The Adventure Trail,” as a young boy scout. His greatest love of all was spending time with his family and grandchildren. He loved sharing stories of his experiences and life adventures, they will be cherished as special memories by his family. Michael is survived by his three daughters and their husbands; Michele and Anthony Van Ness of Shaftsbury, VT, Mary McGuire and Robert Bourn of Durham, ME, and Kathleen and James Melton of Lima, OH; his sister; Margaret Galvin of North Bennington, VT, and 9 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his beloved partner Shirley Barbeau, his son; George “Mick” McGuire and two grandsons, Michael J. Thomas and Danny C. Thomas. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the medical staff at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center for the care and comfort of Michael. Friends may call at the Mahar Funeral Home in Bennington on Tuesday July 18 from 4-7 pm. A prayer service will be offered at the end of the visitation. A private burial will take place in St. John’s Cemetery in North Bennington, VT.
