Michael S. "Mickey" Gardner Sr., 75, a resident of Mann Hill Road North in Pownal, VT died unexpectedly Wednesday October 6, 2021 at his residence.
He was born in Bennington, VT August 23, 1946. He was the son of the late Marcus GardnerJr. I and Beulah (Bump) Gardner. He received his education in Bennington and was a 1964 graduate of Bennington High School.
Mickey married the former Marilyn Smith in February of 1964.
In earlier years Mickey and his family owned and operated Gardner's Store in Pownal. He also trained horses at the former Green Mountain Race Track in Pownal and later at Pocono Downs. Mickey along with his family purchased the family farm on Mann Hill Road North in 1980. They later expanded their operations by purchasing the old Gardner Farm on Mount Anthony Road in Pownal.
Mickey was well trained in operating the farmer. He could do just about anything. He was a mechanic and could fix anything. He was a great role model and teacher to his three boys. Mickey was a longtime member of the Pownal Valley Fire Department. He was instrumental in helping build the Pownal Valley Center Station. He along with his wife Marilyn were members of the Pownal Rescue Squad.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Gardner of Pownal. Three sons, Michael Gardner (Kathy Goodrum), Matt Gardner (Robin) and Marcus Gardner III (Crystal) all of Pownal. Six grandchildren and a great grandson. A sister, Jane Gardner of Bennington and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Sunday October 10, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
A graveside service will be held at the family farm on Mann Hill Road North on Monday October 11, 2021 at 2:00 p.m.
A reception will follow the graveside service at Pownal Center Fire House.
