Michael George Fenwick, 82, a resident of Shaftsbury, died Thursday August 5, 2021 at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington following a long illness.
The tone of an adventurous life was set early on. As a child , he lived in London with his extended family and was bombed by the Germans during the Second World War. He told stories of collecting the fins from unexploded bombs and building bikes from the bits found in the river at the bottom of his Dad's garden.
After serving an apprenticeship with BP as an engineer, he moved to Bristol to work as a draughtsman designing airplane engines for Rolls Royce/Bristol Siddley. Here he formed friendships that have lasted the rest of his life.
Moving again, he trained as a teacher at St. Peter's College in Birmingham and then came to the USA on an exchange visa in 1968. He taught at Prospect School, met and married Liz James in 1969 and returned to England. He continued teaching and did advanced courses at Swansea and a MA from Durham University.
The next challenge, aside from two children ( Toby and Rebecca) was to travel to Queensland, Australia where the family lived for eight years enjoying sailing and field hockey. The family returned to the USA in 1990, where Toby graduated from Middlebury College. Then it was back to England for Rebecca to complete her studies at the University of Birmingham. Michael continued to play and coach field hockey for many years as a member of the Ipswich Hockey Club.
Michael continued to teach in the Ipswich area till 2010, where he and Liz returned to Vermont. He continued to fight melanoma for the next 11 years. He was also a member of the NorShaft Lions Club, the Baker Street Breakfast Club and St. Peter's Epsicopal Church. His two proudest accomplishments in his seventies was to complete his Master's Degree in mathematics from the University of Vermont and writing entertaining children's stories, which are yet to be published.
He leaves behind two brothers, Brian and Edward, two children, Toby and Rebecca and his wife Liz, as well as many friends in Australia, New Zealand, America and England, as well as the enumerable students who had their lives touched by this man.
