Michael T. Downey, 67, a resident of Robinson Ave. in Bennington died Friday, March 31, 2017 at his residence following a brief illness.
Born in New York on October 13, 1949, Michael was the son of the late Thomas and Theresa (Stuart) Downey. He received his early education in Riverdale New York and Manchester Elementary school while residing at Ormsby Hill in Manchester. He attended Manhattan College.
Michael served in the United States Army, as an Honor Guard for the President of the United States. He was a member of 3rd US Infantry, traditionally known as The Old Guard. "The Old Guard" is the Army's official ceremonial unit and escort to the President, and also provides security for Washington, D.C., in time of national emergency or civil disturbance.
Prior to moving to Vermont Michael owned and operated Downey's Tavern just down the street from Manhattan College.
An active community member, Michael was a member of the American Legion Post 13, the Knights of Columbus Council # 307 and was a communicant of Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church. He had a great sense of humor and loved a good joke.
Survivors include three brothers and six sisters, William Downey of Manchester, VT, James Downey of Shaftsbury, VT, Kevin Downey of New York, and Mary, Kathleen, Theresa, Barbara and Celia all of New York and Margaret of Cape Cod, MA along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral mass will be held at Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Bennington on Friday April 7, at 11:00 a.m.
The burial will take place in the family lot at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Valhalla, NY on Saturday, July 8th, 2017 at 11:00 AM.
