Michael Joseph Barber,75, a resident of Tel Road in Bennington died Tuesday April 4, 2017 at the Center for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington following a brief illness.
He was born in Troy, New York August 17, 1941. He was the son of the late Joseph Patrick Barber and Julia H. (Duane) Barber. Mike received his education in Hoosick Falls and was a graduate of Saint Mary's Academy. He later graduated from Hudson Valley Community College with a degree in business.
Mike served his country in the United States Navy.
For many years, Mike was employed at Niagra Mohawk as a Crew Chief.
Ten years ago, he met Jean Short and they have been building a wonderful life together, traveling, playing golf, cooking and family time. Mike was especially proud of his son Mikey who is a well-known local chef.
Mike was a former member of the Hoosick Falls Elks Club where he was twice a Past Exalted Ruler and current member of the Bennington Lodge of Elks # 567. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus and most recently served on the Honor Guard at Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, NY. He was also a member of the American Legion.
Mike was a Green Bay Packers fan and an avid sports enthusiast. His faithful companion was his English Setter "Ziggy"
Survivors include a son, Michael J. Barber of Hoosick Falls, NY, his girlfriend, Jean Short of Bennington; two brothers, Bertram Barber of Saratoga, NY and John Barber and his wife Kate of Pittsfield, MA, a sister Mary Anne Smith and her husband Kenneth of Glastonbury, CT and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral will be held from the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Monday April 10, at 10:30 a.m. with a prayer and then from Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church at 11:00 a.m. where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered.
The burial with military honors will follow at the Gerald B. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, NY at 1:30 pm
