Maurice Kahn
1922-2018
On September 25 Maurice Kahn passed over to be with his wife of over 60 years, Margaret (Peggy) Kahn who died in 2015.
Born in Peoria, Illinois in 1922, Maurice spent much of his life teaching, gardening, loving Peggy, caring for trees, reading poetry, listening to music and being an extraordinary story teller and friend.
He married Peggy in New York City after having spent a magical year in Mexico.
Maurice purchased a small cabin in Weston, Vermont in the 1940s, and he spent summers working in the area. Years later, Maurice returned to his beloved Vermont and retired with Peggy to North Bennington.
Maurice was an active and enthusiastic supporter and member of many local organizations including the North Bennington Tree Committee, Sage City Syndicate and Friends of Hiland Hall Gardens. Maurice was instrumental in restoring the Hiland Hall Gardens and the historic Lord and Burnham Grapery. Maurice loved the garden and loved sharing it with the young and the young at heart.
Maurice and Peggy became Quakers and spent many years in Friends Meetings. These words of George Fox capture Maurice's spirit: "Walk cheerfully over the world."
Maurice leaves a sister, Anne Kahn, of New York City, along with many dear friends and family who have been enriched by knowing this exceptional human being.
Left in final care by Mahar Funeral Home there will be no calling hours or service.
