Mary Hoyt Holden
On December 23, 2016, our Lord took a wonderful angel to be with Him. Mary
Hoyt Holden passed away at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center surrounded by
her family
Born in Bennington, Vermont, September 27, 1922, she was the daughter of the
late Frank and Mary (Robinson) Hoyt.
She was a parishioner of Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church in Bennington.
She attended school in Shaftsbury and was a graduate of North Bennington High
School, Class of 1941.
Mary received her Nursing Diploma from the Henry Bishop III, Memorial School
of Nursing in 1945. Mary was in the Cadet Nurse Corp during her training. She
remained in Pittsfield after graduation and was employed at Pittsfield General
Hospital for four years as the Operating Room Supervisor and then Night
Supervisor.
She married Charles Edgar Holden, son of Edgar and Mary Doyle Holden) on
October 15, 1949 at St. John the Baptist Church in North Bennington, Vermont.
They were married for fifty-nine years when Chuck died on February 12, 2008.
Following her marriage she was employed at the Putnam Memorial Hospital in
Bennington for thirty-four years.
Mary was an active member of AARP for many years. She and her husband went
on many enjoyable trips with their friends. Her two grandchildren were the love of
her life and she enjoyed watching sports, dance recitals, baton recitals and parades
that they were involved in. She also loved her great granddogs; Tasha, Koddi,
Emma, Cooper and Chase.
Mary is survived by one son, Edgar (Joanne) Holden of Shaftsbury, VT; her
daughter, Linda (Keith) Vandale of North Bennington, one grandson Nicholas
(Angela) Holden of Burlington, VT one granddaughter, Katie Vandale (Murray
Lewis Jr.) of Pownal, VT. Mary leaves one sister Aileen (Burt) Luke of Hoosick,
NY. Also several nieces, and nephews.

She is predeceased by her brothers; George, Fred and Leon Hoyt, and her sisters:
Rita Mattison and Frances Hoyt.
The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home on Wednesday,
December 28, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. with a prayer and from Sacred Heart St. Francis
de Sales Church at 11:00 a.m. where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will
be offered.
Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m.
until the time of the service.
Interment will follow in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Bennington Rescue Squad, 1210
McKinley Street, Bennington or the Bennington Area Visiting Nurses and Hospice,
1128 Monument Avenue, Bennington, VT 05201.
