Marilyn Carmody Mahar, 82, a longtime resident of West Road in Bennington, VT died peacefully Thursday April 4, 2024, at her residence at the Village at Fillmore Pond surrounded by her family. She was born in Rutland, VT, on August 1, 1941. She was the daughter of the late John T. Carmody and Marguerite “Muvvy” (Loveday) Carmody. She received her early education in Rutland and was a 1958 graduate of Bennington Catholic High School. On September 12, 1959, she married Alexander E. Mahar at Saint Francis de Sales Church in Bennington. Together they raised five children. Mr. Mahar died May 16, 2022 Marilyn volunteered as a Gray Lady at the former Putnam Memorial Hospital and Southwestern Vermont Medical Center! She enjoyed playing Bridge. Marilyn was an avid golfer. She was a member of both the Mount Anthony Country Club in Bennington and the Taconic Golf Club in Williamstown MA. She recorded a hole in one on the 13th hole at Mount Anthony in the same week that her husband Alex did. She took great pride in her family, her twelve grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She would never miss an opportunity to attend one of the children’s sporting events, plays or musicals. Survivors include her five children, Kelly Mahar McCarthy, John Mahar, Kimalie A. Wassick (Donny), Kristin C. Mahar (Keith) and Kate K. Mahar (Bill) all of Bennington. Her twelve grandchildren, D.J. Wassick, Ali Wassick (Carson), David and Brendan McCarthy, Alexander Mahar (Emily), Jhonny Curran (Kyle) and Grace Mahar, Matt (Monique) and Chad Pulver (Katie) and Emalie, Ben, and Jack Bushee. Five great grandchildren, Basil and Hawkins Thurber, Olive and Rhodes Curran and Moxie Mahar. Her brothers and sisters, John T. Carmody Jr. (Miriam), Michael J. Carmody (Joan) of Hobe Sound, Florida, Patricia C. McKeon (Mark) of Bedford, NH, Thomas J. Carmody (Susan) of Hobe Sound and Kathleen C. Robertson (Neil) of Wilton, CT along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home in Bennington on Thursday April 11, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. The funeral mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church on Friday April 12, at noon. The burial will follow in the family lot at the Old Bennington Catholic Cemetery A reception will follow at the Mount Anthony Country Club. If friends desire contributions in memory of Marilyn C.
