Marie Joyce Ayer (Carpenter)

April 28, 1931 — August 10, 2021

Marie Joyce Ayer, 90, a resident of Sawyer Drive in Bennington, VT died peacefully on Tuesday August 10, 2021 surrounded by family at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center following a long illness.

She was born in Woodford, VT April 28, 1931. She was the daughter of the late Henry M. Carpenter and Ruth E. (Lorette) Carpenter. Marie received her early education in Woodford and was a graduate of Bennington High School.

Marie married Glendon Ayer Jr. in Bennington on October 1, 1949. Mr. Ayer died May 20, 2021.

Marie was a devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She enjoyed raising her children and was very active as a girl scout leader for many years. She also enjoyed making doll clothes and other crafts, which she sold at craft shows and online. When her children were grown, she went to work as a bookkeeper at Charles Watson Real Estate and later at Lonergan and Thomas Insurance Agency from which she retired.

Survivors include four children, Linda Martin of Bennington, Ruth (Alan) Krawczyk of Bennington, Beverly (James) Bayliss of Pownal and Glenn (Marjorie) Ayer of Pownal; seven grandchildren, Amanda Saunders, Matthew Krawczyk, Nicholas Saunders, Alaina Krawczyk, Glenn Ayer Jr., Bradley Martin and Ryan Ayer and several great grandchildren. A brother, Michael Carpenter of Dover, Delaware. Many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Glendon Ayer Jr, her brothers and sisters, Henry Carpenter, Jr., Doris LeBlanc, Roy Carpenter, Robert Carpenter Sr., Luther Alden Carpenter, Jean Stoessel and Clifford Carpenter. Along with a son in law Jerry Martin.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Monday August 16, 2021 at 1:00 p.m.

Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Monday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
