Margaret “Peg” Whalen, 88, passed away peacefully on April 15, 2024. She was born on May 2, 1935, in Brattleboro, Vermont. Upon high school graduation, she joined the Air Force and served two and half years. She married Cranford Waldrop in 1958 of Munford, AL while serving in the Air Force. They had three children, Michael, Jeff and Paul. She married James D’arcy Whalen in 1973. Together they raised a blended family. She cherished all her children and loved to support their activities. She enjoyed playing cards with friends, puzzles, reading books and doing crossword puzzles. She loved her Red Sox and watched them when she could. A special thank you to the Vermont Veterans Home for supporting a trip to Fenway last summer to see the Red Sox. She worked in the Bennington School District and retired in 1997. She was a well-known and liked staff member at Monument Elementary School. She is survived by her children, Shaun and Angie Whalen of Acworth, GA., Sheila and Matt Cook of Lancaster, PA., Dan Whalen and Sharon McQueen of Marina del Rey, CA., Jeff and Christine Waldrop of Fairport, NY., Kerry Whalen of Hayesville, NC., Paul and Lisa Waldrop of Ithaca, NY. Surviving in addition are twelve grandchildren, three great grandchildren, three nieces and one nephew. She was preceded in death by her husband, James D’arcy Whalen; her husband Cranford Waldrop; her daughter Wendy Whalen; her son Michael Waldrop; her brother Francis Shallow; her sister Madeline Lato; her parents, Earl and Marjorie Squires Shallow. The family wishes to thank the staff at the Vermont Veterans Home for the loving care and support they provided Peggy throughout the years. She loved residing at the VA home and had many friends there, including the staff! To honor Peggy’s memory, the family will be holding a celebration of life on a date and location to be determined.
