Margaret E. Lillie, 99, a longtime Pownal resident, passed away on December 4, 2023, at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington. Margaret was born in Bennington on January 2, 1924, the daughter of Daniel F. and Winifred (Flannery) Lillie. She was a 1940 graduate of Bennington High School, a graduate of the University of Vermont in 1944, and graduated from Boston College Law School in 1956. Margaret served in the United States Navy (WAVE) at Quonset Naval Base in Rhode Island from 1945-47. She was the second woman selected to that position. Margaret was an attorney in Bennington with Clark, Lillie, and Holden. She was a former Probate judge in Bennington and served for a time as Bennington County State's Attorney. While living in Pownal, Margaret helped establish the Pownal Racetrack in the 60s and the Pownal Historical Society in 1994. She was the Town Agent in 1974. Margaret is survived by her cousins, Michael Lillie and Rosemary Lillie, both of Shaftsbury, and their son, Jason Lillie, and family of Bennington, VT, and their daughter, Aimee Brown, and family, of Shaftsbury, VT, Shirley Mason and her son, Kenneth Mason and family, Lorraine Gates and her daughter, Candy Morrissey and her family, and her son, Randy Gates and family. She is also survived by her dear friends, Gary and Jean Dickson of Bennington, VT, two nephews, David Cabot and family and Andrew Cabot, and a niece, Barbara Lally, and her family, all from Florida, and many, many, more family and friends. She was predeceased by her brother, Frederick Daniel Lillie, her sisters, Wendy Cabot and Ellen Lillie, and her closest, dearest friend, Liz Salem. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, December 16, 2023, at 11:30 AM at Sacred Heart/St. Francis de Sales Church in Bennington. The Rite of Committal and Burial and Military Honors will follow at Park Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the Mahar Funeral Home 628 Main Street in Bennington, VT on Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. If friends desire, contributions in Margaret’s memory may be made to the Sacred Heart/St. Francis Food Pantry 238 Main Street Bennington, VT 05201 or the Vermont Veterans Home Activity Fund 325 North Street Bennington, VT 05201.
