Lyman W. Potter Jr. passed away unexpectedly at the Albany Medical Center on Saturday, August 31, 2024. He was a resident of South Stream Road, Pownal. He was born in Bennington, Vermont on July 14, 1935. He was the son of Lyman and Hazel (Olin) Potter. Lyman graduated in 1953 from Bennington High School. His siblings were Anna Mattison, Nancy Aldrich, Linda Cassano, Mary Williams, and was predeceased by his brother, William Potter. He lived next door to his parents and enjoyed weekend visits with several nieces and nephews. Lyman married Jean (Harrington) on September 1, 1956 at the First United Methodist Church of Bennington. They were blessed with ten children: Edward Lyman Potter (predeceased), James Potter and Kelley of Pownal, Robin Hoag and David of Shaftsbury, Theodore Potter and Lynn of Florida, Victoria Novotny and Randy of Arlington, Sue Pochop and Peter of Richmond VT, Anthony Potter of Pownal, Brenda Phillips and Samuel Piper of Bolton VT, Justin (Jake) Potter and Mary of Tennessee, Loretta Snyder and Christopher of Bennington. Lyman had 31 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter-in-law, Tammy (Myers) Potter and grandson, Matthew Hoag, both of Shaftsbury. Lyman did a short enlistment in the Vermont Army National Guard. He was employed at Nicholson’s Feed Service while living in Argyle, NY. When back in Vermont, he worked at Johnson Oil Company. He owned and operated the Rocking P Tack Shop. He and his brother owned and operated a Shell station together. He worked at Vermont Container and later East Mountain Pallets. He retired in 1997. Lyman enjoyed hunting, picking wild berries, playing cards, reading old western novels, gardening, feeding the birds, watching horse races (family rode in gymkhana’s in early years), coin collecting, camping, NASCAR, the Boston Red Sox, the New England Patriots, jigsaw puzzles, scratch-off lottery tickets, and sharing chocolate minis with his great- grandchildren. At Lyman’s request, there will be no calling hours or funeral service. The family will be having a celebration of life at 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 8, 2024 at the Moose Lodge, 916 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201. The burial will take place at a private graveside service for the family in White Chapel Cemetery in Bennington, Lot #57. In lieu of flowers if friends desire, contributions in memory of Lyman W. Potter, Jr. may be made to the Matthew Hoag Memorial Scholarship through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
